Writing parent views for an EHCP annual review
What to include in your parent contribution to an EHCP annual review: progress, what's working, what isn't, changes to request — with a simple structure.
Every EHCP must be reviewed at least annually (SEND Regulations 2014, reg. 18), and the review must seek your views. This is your yearly opportunity to get the plan updated — and the quality of your written contribution matters.
A simple structure for your views
- Progress against each outcome: for every outcome in Section E, state what has improved, stayed the same, or got worse — with examples and dates.
- What's working: name the provision in Section F that has helped, so it is protected.
- What's not working: provision not being delivered as written (this is important — Section F is legally enforceable), or provision that no longer fits.
- Changes since the last review: new diagnoses, changed needs, new evidence.
- Requests: specific amendments — new outcomes, quantified provision, different placement if needed.
- Your child's views: include their voice — drawings, quotes, or their own written views.
Send it in writing
Verbal comments at the meeting are easy to lose. Send your views in writing before or at the review, and ask for them to be recorded in the review report. The council must respond to requested changes and explain any refusals.
